Yaz Lawsuits and Claims

Both Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills, manufactured and marketed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, have been known to cause serious effects in users, some even life-threatening. Claims brought forth by lawyers and their clients accuse Bayer of misleading consumers about the side effects of the drug, while exaggerating the benefits that the drug supposedly had.

Uses and Claims of Yaz

Clients fighting against Bayer claim that the company over-exaggerated the use of Yaz, such as how well the medication cleared up acne, and also how it helped ease the symptoms of PMS in women. But the birth control manufacture failed to adequately inform patients about the many serious risks that the drug could cause. These risks include: blood clots, gallbladder disease, stroke, pulmonary embolism, heart attack, and even death, to name a few. Bayer also did not inform the public about the risk of the ingredient drospirenone found in Yaz, which is a synthetic kind of progestin that is used in combination with estrogen in birth control pills.

The Lawsuits

Thousands of injuries and health problems have been reported from users of Yaz, and the drug has been linked to about 100 deaths nationwide. By the beginning of February, 2012, around 12,000 lawsuits were pending against Bayer in the United States. By July of 2013, the company had settled claims of about 6,760 patients (Chicago Tribune). These settlements totaled $1.4 billion dollars. Bayer also claims to have set aside about $610 million dollars for future lawsuits against them concerning Yaz cases. Users of the drug who have not yet talked to a lawyer are urged to contact one, as compensation for illness or injuries from the drug can still be received.
